Ever read a scripture you know is true but you don’t really understand or get it’s application?
Here is one of mine..
“While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him. Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.”
But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.” Matthew 12:46-50.
Every time I read those verses I felt uncomfortable like what were His mother and brothers doing that made Him say that or quite frankly that’s a bit harsh! 👀
I’m Yoruba and Nigerian and in my tax paying age I still feel like I’d be in so much trouble with my parents if I ever said such a thing.
But I get it now!
The more I grow in my love for God and for His kingdom the more I see that those that are closest to me are those who are also hungry, passionate and sacrificial in their love and service for God.
I can’t be close with lukewarm, indifferent people towards God.
That sounds harsh but it’s true. I’m talking about those that are lukewarm or cold and are comfortable there. They don’t desire more. Those that are comfortable in the ankle-deep level of relationship with God.
You see, whoever is close to you influences you. Regardless of whether you’re their leader or not.
Which is probably why Jesus quickly rebuked the spirit that influenced Peter to rebuke Him for saying He would die. (Mathew 16:23)
Those close to you can influence you. (1 Corinthians 15:33).
Remember Iron sharpens iron. (Proverbs 27:27).
Don’t get me wrong.. I’m not saying you have to be as spiritually mature as each other but you definitely need to have a hunger and pursuit for God.
Some of you are probably thinking well.. you should be able to get someone on fire if you’re on fire. And you’re not wrong..
But imagine getting an equal amount of hot water and equal amount of cold water and mixing them. Remember it’s equal amount.. the hot water will end up lukewarm.
And whoever is lukewarm and doesn’t repent God said He would spue out. (Rev 3:16).
Back to the scripture about who is My mother, brother, sister. Jesus said those He considered as His mother, brother or sister were those that are doing the will of the Father.
It had nothing to do with how long that person had been a Christian. It had nothing to do with how many disciples, or should I say followers that person had.
The criteria for being considered family for Jesus is “are you doing the will of My Father.”
There’s a limit on how well I can relate to those who are not passionately in love with God evidenced in their pursuit and service.
There’s something about being around someone who is hungry for God, who serves God sacrificially.. it helps me stay hungry. Let me put it this way.. THEY PROVOKE ME TO GOOD WORKS, TO STAY HUNGRY FOR GOD.
“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25 KJV
I’m going to be part of the five wise virgins that had oil when the bridegroom came so my lamp can be lit. (Mathew 25:1-13)
As supposed to be in the company of the foolish whose lamps went out because they didn’t do what they needed to get extra oil.
We can’t be slothful, lagging behind in diligence, serving God only when it’s convenient.
We must be fervent in spirit, serving the Lord. (Romans 12:11).
We must be steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord. (1 Corinthians 15:58).
There is something stronger than biology, it’s your spiritology. (I’m Nigerian we make up words).
There’s something stronger than “we’ve known each other for years” (in the flesh) ..
See Christ died for everyone so that those who receive His new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them. (2 Corinthians 5:15).
I know it doesn’t mean I’ll be friends with everyone that’s on fire lol.. there are many factors when it comes to friendships and there are different depths to friendships.
My strongest and deepest friendships and connections are with those whose lives provoke me to love the Lord with everything, not just with words but with sacrificial service.
I’m not trying to get into trouble so I’m not going insert pictures but I’m so grateful that even on my down days I can be encouraged to keep the faith, to keep going by looking at those around me.
