You don’t know what you are asking!IMG_0825

This  is what Jesus said to Peter, one of His closest disciples in Mathew 16:23.

Offence is defined as a breach of law or rule, it is also the act of attacking someone or the one more commonly dealt with is annoyance or resentment brought about by a perceived insult or disregard for oneself.

Using each one of this definitions, you can see that the enemy was trying to cause Jesus to disobey God. God sent Jesus to die for the sins of the world, it was a heavy assignment but what was asked. Satan here was an offence (opposition) to Jesus’ purpose.
If you’ve read my previous blog then you will understand where I am coming from. Here Jesus had just spoken about the fact that He would die but Peter rebuked Him for saying that.

It’s easy to think that was from a place of love but Jesus recognised it was the ploy of the enemy to distract Him from God’s purpose. Therefore Satan was trying to get Jesus to break God’s command (rule or law).”Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.”- James 4:7.

Offence as an attack- you see the enemy doesn’t just come in the form of demons, witches, he comes in the form of self gratification. See what Jesus said.. “Satan you are an offence to me because you are not mindful of the things of God but the things of men.”

Basically saying you are trying to get me to take my eyes off seeking the Kingdom first and doing the Father’s will. You want me entangled with human affairs instead of obeying God. You want me to be self preservative, thinking about me, myself and I, you want me to be carnal. That’s an attack (offence) on your purpose.

That is why some people haven’t stepped into God’s purpose for them. The devil has enticed them out of the way, making them choose comfort over the cross. The wide way over the narrow way.

But if we are to be good soldiers, then like Paul advised Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:3-4 “You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.”

Why so deep? It’s because with God if you don’t take up your cross you won’t be able to follow Him, if you try to save your life you will lose it but if you lose it for His sake you will find it. (Mathew 16:24-25).

In MARK‬ ‭8:34‬ ‭AMP‬‬ “Jesus called the crowd together with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to follow Me [as My disciple], he must deny himself [set aside selfish interests], and take up his cross [expressing a willingness to endure whatever may come] and follow Me [believing in Me, conforming to My example in living and, if need be, suffering or perhaps dying because of faith in Me].”

Jesus is an example to us.. not just in glory but in the way He got to glory. We are to share in His suffering in order to partake of the glory.

The only way to overcome the devil is through the blood, through our testimony but also not being afraid to die to ourselves. (Rev 12:11). Except we die to our selfish interests, we can’t really seek God kingdom and righteousness first. We won’t be able to be life givers! The enemy will always use fear to inhibit us leaving us as potentials.

I put it to you that one of the reasons we have a lot of Christians with damaged souls is because they are in disobedience. Trying to serve God on their own terms.

“What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul or what will a man give in exchange for his soul”- Mathew 16:26.

In this verse Jesus was speaking to his disciples, those that were already following him. This was triggered by Peter, who already had a revelation of God but was now opposing the will of God for Jesus.

When we disobey God we damage our souls.

Finally, offence as a perceived insult or disregard to oneself. Now though Satan did not insult Jesus, I believe the right perspective on the devil will help us in refuting and resisting him. We must see him as he is, he is our enemy, the enemy of God is our enemy.

In Psalm 139:21-22- “O LORD, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you? Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies.”

You can’t be indifferent to the devil. You must hate the devil. Satan is an offence to you! Whenever he comes, he is trying to steal, kill or destroy. He’s the enemy that goes about seeking whom to devour, he is trying to cause you to fall.

When you hate the devil and are discerning, you will not consider any offer, proposal or alternative he gives.

A prayer I have prayed and I continue to pray is Lord help me to love what you love and hate what you hate. This helps me make sure I am in alignment with God  so I don’t approve what God disapproves of.
I pray that God will give us the spirit of discernment so we are able to know when something is from God or the devil. The grace not to take the alternative given by the enemy, to see him as an offence and to resist him.

Grace and Peace
